What is Babywearing? Why is it important?

Pediatrician, Dr. William Sears, seems to have coined the phrase "attachment parenting". One of his main principles of attachment parenting is called  babywearing and there are many benefits attributed to babywearing and this in-arms style of parenting.

Some of the positive  claims fits of babywearing include:
The Mothers' natural progesterone progesterone (mothering hormone)  increases throughthe  physical contact with the baby / infant, leading to a more intimate maternal bond, along with easier breastfeeding and all around better care, thus lowering the incidence of postpartum depression and psychosomatic illness

Infants who are carried will be calmer because every one of their primal or survival needs are being met. The caregiver can be smelled, seen, heard,  touched, tasted, while providing feeding and the constant motion necessary for the infants continuing neural development, gastrointestinal, respiratory health and to establish balance, and inner ear development,  also the muscle tone is constant.

Infants that are "worn" become organized. Parental rhythms ( heartbeat, walking, etc.) have a balancing and a soothing effect on the infant.

These "worn" Babies become "humanized " earlier by developing faster socially. Because they are closer to people and can study facial expressions, learn the language faster and also become familiar with body language.

Contrary to western cultural myths, independence really is established at an earlier point.
Attachment between the child and caregiver is more secure.

Babywearing also decreases risk of positional plagiocephaly (the flat head syndrome) that is caused by extended time spent in a car seat and by sleeping on the back.   Although, sleeping on the back is recommended to decrease the risk of SIDS.    Cranial distortion resulting from non-vehicular time in car seats has shown to be more severe than in children who develop plagiocephaly from back-lying on a mattress.

A concern over plagiocephaly has  led the American Academy of Pediatrics to recommend that babies should spend minimal time in car seats (when not a passenger in a vehicle) or other seating that maintains the supine positioning.   babywearing positions do not require infants to lie supine while being carried. Infants can even be worn while they sleep, which will also decrease sleeping time spent in the supine position.
